The Defender

A working piece of
British coachbuilding

The vehicle is the reason people stop and look twice. A restored Land Rover Defender, rebuilt from the chassis up and fitted out by hand — oak serving counter, brass and leather details, and a proper commercial coffee bar behind the hatch.

It is built to be used. It travels to stubble fields, parkland, farmyards and gravel drives, sets up in twenty minutes, and runs self-sufficiently on board power and water with no need for a hook-up.

Choose the one that suits the ground

Both are finished to the same standard and serve the same menus — the choice is about access and the space you have.

  • Turns and parks where the 110 cannot
  • Ideal for smaller gatherings and tight sites

Set-up

More than the vehicle

Where the ground or the weather asks for it, we bring the rest of the set-up with us.

Gazebos

Additional covered space alongside the vehicle, for shelter, shade or a served area away from the hatch.

Seating

Seating set out for guests to sit with a coffee or a drink, rather than stand through the whole thing.

Floor coverings

Matting and coverings over wet grass, mud or gravel, so guests aren't picking their way across a field.

Available for

Where you'll find us

Shoots

Coffee and bacon rolls at the meet, elevenses between drives, and something warm in hand when the light goes.

Weddings

Arrival drinks on the lawn, a champagne moment after the ceremony, and coffee to carry guests into the evening.

Estates & Open Days

A hospitality point that looks like it belongs on the estate — for game fairs, garden openings and country shows.

Corporate

Client days, launches and away days, with service that flatters the host rather than competing with them.

Private Events

Birthdays, christenings, anniversaries and the sort of gathering that deserves more than a kettle in the kitchen.

Practicalities

Questions we're usually asked

What is Field & Feather?

Field & Feather is a mobile hospitality service working from restored Land Rover Defenders, operated from our base in North Dorset. We bring barista coffee, champagne and other drinks, and seasonal food to shoots, weddings, estates, corporate days and private gatherings — on open ground, in a courtyard or wherever the day happens.

Do you cater shoot days?

Yes — shoot days are what the vehicles were built for. A typical day runs coffee and bacon rolls at the meet, elevenses between drives with sloe gin and something hot, lunch or a grazing spread, and a drink when the last drive comes in. We set up on stubble, in parkland or at the edge of a wood, and we work to the shoot captain's timings rather than our own.

Do you do weddings?

Yes. Most wedding bookings are arrival drinks on the lawn, a champagne moment after the ceremony, and barista coffee into the evening when guests are flagging. The Defender works well as a feature in photographs, and takes up far less room than a marquee bar.

How much does it cost?

The coffee set-up starts at £750. Everything beyond that is quoted individually, because a coffee stop for twenty on a shoot morning and a full day of hospitality for two hundred are different jobs — the figure depends on guest numbers, which menu you choose, how long we're on site and how far we travel. Tell us the date and roughly what you have in mind and we'll come back with a fixed price, not an estimate that moves later.

How far do you travel?

Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Somerset, Berkshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Surrey are covered as standard from our North Dorset base. We regularly travel further — Devon, Cornwall, Sussex, Kent, the Cotswold counties, Yorkshire and Wales — particularly for full-day and multi-day bookings. Anywhere else is a question of notice and travel time; ask and we'll tell you honestly whether it works.

How many guests can you serve?

Comfortably from a private party of a dozen up to a few hundred across a day. Numbers over a hundred served at once become a question of timings and staffing rather than capacity, and we'll say plainly what's realistic when we quote rather than promise a queue you'd regret.

Which vehicle will come to my event?

Whichever suits the ground. The Defender 110 carries the full coffee bar and a wraparound awning, and is the better choice for open ground and larger numbers. The Defender 90, in Aintree Green and clad throughout in oak, serves the same menus from a smaller footprint — it's the one for courtyards, walled gardens, narrow lanes and difficult access.

What do you need from us on the day?

Firm ground to park on and enough room to open the awning — roughly eight metres by five for the 110, less for the 90. Nothing else: both vehicles carry their own power and water, so there's no hook-up to arrange and no generator humming behind the guests.

What happens if the weather turns?

We serve through it. The awning covers the serving side and the vehicles are built for wet fields rather than car parks. If the forecast is genuinely grim it's worth talking through where guests will stand — we can bring gazebos, seating and floor coverings so nobody is standing in mud with a coffee.

Can you serve alcohol?

Yes. Alcohol service is arranged event by event, either under the venue's own licence or our cover depending on the site. Tell us where you are and we'll sort that side of it before the day.

Can you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes — gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options are part of planning the menu rather than an afterthought. Let us know numbers and requirements when we put the proposal together and they'll be built in.

Are you insured and qualified?

Yes. We hold both public liability and employers' liability insurance, and our staff are food hygiene qualified. Estates, venues and event organisers who need documentation before the day can have copies on request.

How far in advance should we book?

Shoot days and summer weekends go first, so the winter season and wedding dates are worth pinning down well ahead. That said, short notice is always worth asking about — we'd rather tell you no than have you assume the answer.
